What do they mean and why is this important for patients?

If you've ever considered taking part in a clinical trial, or just been interested in new drugs, you've probably heard of 'phases' - phase 1, phase 2, phase 3... But what do they actually mean?

In this article we will explain how the different stages of clinical trials work and why it is important to know which phase a trial is in.

How does the path of a new treatment begin?

Before a new drug or therapy reaches hospitals and pharmacies, it goes through several important steps. First, it is tested in the laboratory and on animals. Then, if it has good results and is considered safe enough, human trials begin. These are called clinical trials and are divided into several phases.

Phase 1: First human testing

Conducted with a small number of volunteers (usually healthy).

The aim is to check whether the medicine is safe and how it is tolerated by the body.

This is the phase in which possible side effects are most carefully observed.

Phase 2: Demonstration of effect and safety

Conducted with more participants who have the specific disease.

The aim is to find out whether the new treatment has an effect and whether it is safe in real patients.

Here, results such as improvement of symptoms, need for additional treatment, etc. are observed.

Phase 3: Confirmation of effectiveness in a large group of patients

It takes place with a large number of participants - hundreds or thousands.

The aim is to confirm whether the treatment is effective and safe in real-world settings.

Often (but not always) the new treatment is compared with standard therapy or with placebo, depending on the disease and available treatments.

Rarer side effects that did not occur in the smaller number of patients in phase 2 are also being tracked in this phase.

What does it mean for you if you participate?

Phase 2 and 3 studies are mainly conducted at Unimed Medical Center. This means that:

Investigational drugs have already passed phase 1, i.e. they have already been tested for safety in humans.

By the time of inclusion in phase 2 or 3, it is known how they act on the body, how they are dosed and what reactions are expected.

Risks to participants are lower (but not zero) because there is already experience and data.

In other words, if you participate in a Unimed study, you are not the "first person" to take a treatment. Rather, you are helping science better understand whether a new treatment really works well and whether it can be approved and used widely.

Conclusion

Clinical trial phases exist to ensure the safety and effectiveness of new therapies. Your participation in a phase 2 or 3 study means that the drug has already been through serious checks. And you're not only getting access to a cutting-edge treatment, you're also contributing to the advancement of medicine.

If you have any questions or would like to find out more about ongoing research at Unimed, our team are always on hand to explain everything in a clear and understandable way.

Ако някога сте обмисляли участие в клинично изпитване или просто сте се интересували от нови лекарства, вероятно сте чували за „фази“ – фаза 1, фаза 2, фаза 3… Но какво всъщност означават те?
