Summer, salt and electrolytes: how sweating affects our health.

Hot summer days bring with them more time outdoors, more movement and, consequently, more sweating. While sweating is a natural mechanism for cooling the body, it can lead to the loss of important substances without which our bodies cannot function normally. One of the key elements here is electrolyte balance.

What are electrolytes?

Electrolytes are minerals that dissolve in body fluids and carry an electrical charge. The most important among them are:

  • Sodium (salt)
  • Potassium
  • Magnesium
  • Calcium
  • Chlorides

They are involved in vital processes such as:

  • Control of muscle contractions (including the heart)
  • Maintaining hydration
  • Conduction of nerve impulses
  • pH balance in the body

Why does sweating matter in summer?

When we sweat, our body loses not only water, but also electrolytes, especially sodium и Chlorides. In high temperatures, sports or even just a long stay outdoors, the loss can be significant. If we don't compensate for it, it can add up:

  • Headache
  • Worldwatch
  • Muscle cramps
  • Common weakness
  • Abnormal heart rhythm

How important is salt?

Although in everyday life we often hear that we should reduce salt, in summer and when actively sweating it is important to take it in a balanced amount. Sodium helps the body retain water and maintains proper cell function.

Council: If you play sports outdoors, work in warm conditions or feel signs of dehydration - don't rely on water alone. Taking mineral water, lightly salted foods or electrolyte drinks can help.

How to maintain your electrolyte balance in summer

  1. Hydrate properly - not only with water, but also with liquids that contain minerals (natural mineral water, coconut water, broths).
  2. Consume potassium-rich foods - bananas, avocados, potatoes, spinach.
  3. Include magnesium and calcium - through nuts, dairy products and green vegetables.
  4. Don't avoid salt completelyespecially if you sweat profusely.
  5. Listen to your body - feeling faint, crampy or dizzy could be a sign that you're losing more than you need.

In summary:

In the summer, our bodies work hard to cool down, but this costs us in lost water and vital electrolytes. Instead of relying on fluids alone, it's a good idea to think about quality intake of salt, potassium and other mineralsto maintain our energy, heart health and good mood.
